A beginner-friendly (A2) guide to comparing things in German with Komparativ (comparative), Superlativ (superlative), and Vergleiche (comparisons), including examples, exercises, and tips.

Understanding Comparisons

1. Komparativ (Comparative)

Definition: Compares two things (e.g., "bigger").

Formation: Adjective + -er (e.g., klein → kleiner). Add e if ending in -d, -t, -s, -ß, -z (e.g., heiß → heißer). Umlaut for a, o, u in one-syllable words (e.g., groß → größer). Irregular: gut → besser.

Structure: So … wie (equal), als (unequal).

2. Superlativ (Superlative)

Definition: Shows the highest/lowest degree (e.g., "biggest").

Formation: Attributive: -st/-est + endings (e.g., der kleinste Hund). Predicative: am + -sten (e.g., am kleinsten). Irregular: gut → beste/am besten.

3. Vergleiche (Comparisons)

Definition: Making comparisons using Komparativ or Superlativ.

Formation: Equality: so + adjective + wie. Inequality: -er + als. Superlative: -st(e) or am … -sten.
